Prophet Muhammad’s Promise to Christians

with 31 comments

If you relied on mainstream media for your news, you’d think all Malaysian Muslims are up in arms – truth is, it’s mostly UMNO. In reply to Malaysia’s battle for ‘Allah’ goes online …let us all reflect and do the right thing for the sake of our nation and more importantly, for the sake of our children. Otherwise, our nation will regress further.

First, let us go back to basics, read Prophet Muhammad’s Promise to Christians to know what a true Muslim would do, as expressed and demonstrated by Prophet Muhammad himself…

First Published 2009-12-28:
Prophet Muhammad’s Promise to Christians

The document is not a modern human rights treaty but even thought it was penned in 628 A.D. it clearly protects the right to property, freedom of religion, freedom of work, and security of the person, says Muqtedar Khan.

Muslims and Christians together constitute over fifty percent of the world and if they lived in peace, we will be half way to world peace. One small step that we can take towards fostering Muslim-Christian harmony is to tell and retell positive stories and abstain from mutual demonization.

In this article I propose to remind both Muslims and Christians about a promise that Prophet Muhammed (pbuh) made to Christians. The knowledge of this promise can have enormous impact on Muslim conduct towards Christians. Muslims generally respect the precedent of their Prophet and try to practice it in their lives.

In 628 AD, a delegation from St. Catherine’s Monastery came to Prophet Muhammed and requested his protection. He responded by granting them a charter of rights, which I reproduce below in its entirety. St. Catherine’s Monastery is located at the foot of Mt. Sinai and is the world’s oldest monastery. It possesses a huge collection of Christian manuscripts, second only to the Vatican, and is a world heritage site. It also boasts the oldest collection of Christian icons. It is a treasure house of Christian history that has remained safe for 1400 years under Muslim protection.

The Promise to St. Catherine:

“This is a message from Muhammad ibn Abdullah, as a covenant to those who adopt Christianity, near and far, we are with them.

Verily I, the servants, the helpers, and my followers defend them, because Christians are my citizens; and by God! I hold out against anything that displeases them.

No compulsion is to be on them. Neither are their judges to be removed from their jobs nor their monks from their monasteries. No one is to destroy a house of their religion, to damage it, or to carry anything from it to the Muslims’ houses.

Should anyone take any of these, he would spoil God’s covenant and disobey His Prophet. Verily, they are my allies and have my secure charter against all that they hate.

No one is to force them to travel or to oblige them to fight. The Muslims are to fight for them. If a female Christian is married to a Muslim, it is not to take place without her approval. She is not to be prevented from visiting her church to pray. Their churches are to be respected. They are neither to be prevented from repairing them nor the sacredness of their covenants.

No one of the nation (Muslims) is to disobey the covenant till the Last Day (end of the world).”

The first and the final sentence of the charter are critical. They make the promise eternal and universal. Muhammed asserts that Muslims are with Christians near and far straight away rejecting any future attempts to limit the promise to St. Catherine alone. By ordering Muslims to obey it until the Day of Judgment the charter again undermines any future attempts to revoke the privileges. These rights are inalienable. Muhammed declared Christians, all of them, as his allies and he equated ill treatment of Christians with violating God’s covenant.

A remarkable aspect of the charter is that it imposes no conditions on Christians for enjoying its privileges. It is enough that they are Christians. They are not required to alter their beliefs, they do not have to make any payments and they do not have any obligations. This is a charter of rights without any duties!

The document is not a modern human rights treaty but even thought it was penned in 628 A.D. it clearly protects the right to property, freedom of religion, freedom of work, and security of the person.

I know most readers, must be thinking so what? Well the answer is simple. Those who seek to foster discord among Muslims and Christians focus on issues that divide and emphasize areas of conflict. But when resources such as Muhammad’s promise to Christians are invoked and highlighted it builds bridges. It inspires Muslims to rise above communal intolerance and engenders good will in Christians who might be nursing fear of Islam or Muslims.

When I look at Islamic sources, I find in them unprecedented examples of religious tolerance and inclusiveness. They make me want to become a better person. I think the capacity to seek good and do good inheres in all of us. When we subdue this predisposition towards the good, we deny our fundamental humanity. In this holiday season, I hope all of us can find time to look for something positive and worthy of appreciation in the values, cultures and histories of other peoples.

Confident People Do Not Get Confused
Rantings by Marina Mahathir

Now, when that delegation from St Catherine’s monastery came to meet with Prophet Mohamad (pbuh), I suppose it’s fair to assume that they spoke Arabic to one another. And when they were conversing, surely the word ‘God’ must have come up. As in “May God Be With You” and such like. What word did the Prophet (pbuh) use for ‘God’ I wonder? And what did the St Catherinians use in return? For monotheists like them, was there a ‘your God’ and ‘my God’ type of situation, or did they understand that they were both talking about the same One?

While some idiots are mourning over the ‘loss’ of the word ‘Allah’ and therefore basically telling the world that they are people easily confused by nomenclature, and others are predicting riots over what is basically a ‘copyright’ issue, let me define what I think a confident Muslim should be:

  1. A confident Muslim is unfazed by the issue of God’s name. God speaks to all of humankind in the Quran and never said that only Muslims could call him by the name Allah.
  2. A confident Muslim has 99 names to choose from to describe that One God. My favourites are Ar-Rahman (The All-Compassionate) and Ar-Rahim (The All-Merciful).
  3. A confident Muslim never gets confused over which is his/her religion and which is other people’s. For instance, a confident Muslim knows exactly what the first chapter of the Quran is. And it’s not the Lord’s Prayer.
  4. A confident Muslim will not walk into a church, hear a liturgy in Malay or Arabic where they use the word ‘Allah’ and then think that he or she is in a mosque. A confident Muslim knows the difference.
  5. A confident Muslim is generous, inclusive and doesn’t think that his or her brethren is made exclusive through the use of a single language. The confident Muslim is well aware that in the Middle East, all services of ANY religion are in Arabic because that’s what they all speak.
  6. A confident Muslim knows the basis of his/her faith are the five pillars of Islam and will not be shaken just because other people call God by the same name.
  7. A Muslim believes in only One God. Therefore it makes sense that other people should call God by the same name because there is no other God.

ART THOU NOT aware that it is God whose limitless glory all [creatures] that are in the heavens and on earth extol, even the birds as they spread out their wings? Each [of them] knows indeed how to pray unto Him and to glorify Him; and God has full knowledge of all that they do: (Surah Nour, Verse 41) (Asad)

So I would ask those people demonstrating against the Court decision, have you no pride? Are you saying you’re easily confused?

And before anyone says I have no qualifications to say these things, read what Dr Asri Zainal Abidin (who does have qualifications no matter what JAIS says) has written about this very subject here.

And here’s something interesting. In 2007, the Majlis Agama Negeri Perlis, which is a large majlis filled with people very learned in Islamic religious knowledge, discussed the question of the use of ‘Allah’ by non-Muslims. Their unanimous decision? They issued a fatwa to say that there is absolutely nothing wrong with non-Muslims using the word at all.(This was told to me by Dr. Asri but I cannot find the fatwa anywhere online because all the religious departments’ websites are so useless.)

Are we now going to excommunicate the whole of Perlis?

  1. Thank you, Marina. Well-said. More than half the Christian population in Malaysia are from Sabah and Sarawak, and they pray and worship in Malay. And they have been doing so, praying and worshiping in Malay, even before Malaysia came into existence.

Although I mainly pray in English, I have been using the word Allah in my praise and worship for the past 25 years! This was because in my university days, the Catholic students will come together every Friday lunchtime, and we pray. We will sing some English hymns, and also some Malay hymns which are most familiar with our sisters and brothers from Sabah and Sarawak. We will also utter our prayers in Malay and in English That was how I learnt to pray in Malay.

The other point is how do I, a Christian, cause any confusion to anyone by calling to Allah in my prayers? I pray in private, and in my church. How does my praying to Allah challenge the position of Islam?

Why does anyone have to tell Catholics how they should produce the magazine meant for Catholics? Why do Christians in Malaysia have to call God any other way than the way they know Him? Where is the justice? Where is the 1Malaysia?

When PM Najib (and think-alikes) say the matter is very sensitive to Muslims, and they will do their darnest to reverse the court decision, does he consider that the matter is also very sensitive to Christians? Does he care for the minority Christians?

  5. for me the word Allah is a good word but if muslims in malaysia does not want us to use it.. then its fine.. maybe we have to change to english bible but its not a big burden since all of us now getting good education not like the old times when christianity came to tanah melayu and borneo.. it makes no diffrence to us as long as we know our faith.. i believe god will always want us human live in harmony no matter what our religeous is.. it us human who sometimes forget that we are drawn to the devil’s temptation whom will try all kind of way to make us loose our faith.. i have close family member that are muslims and i am a non muslim.. when we fight over this we will distroy this harmony which we have already build through good understandings of a mixed race and religeous country(which we were very proud of to the eyes of the world once upon a time ago).

lets just open our eyes and think back. Amen.

  7. why now they came out with this issue…this is “politic”…I totally agree with the below comments..This word been used since Prophet Muhammad and “Allah” in Arabic is pronounced as “Al-lawh” or “Al-lah”…The Hebew word “Elohim” is the plural of “Elowah”, which is derived from the Aramaic word “Alaha”, or “Elahh”; the same as the Arabic word “Allah” or “Allawh” in pronunciation.

If we pronounce the words “Allah” in Arabic and “Elahh (pronounced as ‘El-aw’)” in Aramaic, then we would hear almost the same exact word.

Again…it was noticed that the word “elahh” does exist in the Hebrew bible…what suprise me is not in the spelling but the pronunciation and meaning….

SO, why we must fight and not find out the solution..peace…

“as the only choice is to join the army of Islam or die.”

It annoyed me that some religion(ex:X religion) think that their religion is so good that one who doesn’t join them will die badly or be punish by X God. Oh, please lah, they have their own God to punish them for whatever crime they have made in their life. They dont need your God’s help to punish them. Besides, who are you to say that people who are not believing your God is a, how should i say this?, a bad or an abomination??

Second thing that really2 annoyed me is that some religion believe they can use force for greater good. Please lah (again), do you really wanted to be like America?? (i bomb u and u bomb me is really brings no benefit). Between, where are you, stronger Islamic country, when your weaker Islamic country friends being attack??

  15. Our gods will judge us, but until then, we are humans under the same sky, on the same planet. Until we meet them, god or no, our actions on earth will bear its consequences.

  16. Please stop dividing God and please do not possess Him.

He belongs to all of mankind. There is nothing exclusive about Him. If you believe in the one human race, there is also only one God or a Power surpassing all human endeavours. He cannot be possessed. So please do not even try.

Forget about name calling. Why squabble over a name, for someone as Awesome as God. Just look out the window, watch a sunset, or listen to some glorious, divine music and you will automatically be saying, “Oh God, you are so wonderfully beautiful.”

Organized religion has taken away this kind of spontaneity in us, to respond without thought, without fear, without prejudice, without any conditions…just what comes from the heart. And this is the best praise of God.This is prayer. To tell him that His gifts to us are so special.

It applies to name calling….no name that you call Him, or any means used to possess Him, through a name, will not even be sufficient.

Because He is not within the scope of human understanding. He is a Mystery…therefo try at least to seek Him. It will be a worthy exercise. And please let’s live in peace, as One People One Nation, at least, for His sake.

Messiah Jesus on knowing Allah/God says in Revelation 1:1 chapter 1 verse 1 and 3:19&20; the Words of Messiah Jesus given from heaven.”

“I love you, and ask you to repent from your sins, quickly. Behold I am at your heart’s door knocking to come in, if you ask me in, i will begin fellowship/friendship/sup with you and you with me.”

I prayed, “Thank you Messiah, help me and I am sorry for my sins, even one lie, come into my heart and be my friend, amen.”
At that point I knew new life and amazing grace.

Isaiah 53rd chapter predicted that the Messiah would die with the wicked as a lamb for our sins and be rejected. and that he would be burried with the rich, and see his believers.

One’s Allah says to kill those that come to believe what Messiah Jesus teaches; Mercy killing for Allah.

why some believes Messiah Jesus,, who states “I and my father are one” If you have seen me you have seen the father.” Gospel of John
“If any man adds to my words, they shall have plagues put upon them.”

  26. In this Islam holds to an idea that Jesus is simply one more prophet in the line of God’s prophets (Yet who is the one and only Messiah, who is coming back to reign? the most important one!)
Islam rejects the promises of the book according to what the ‘angel’ or deamon/fallen angel told illiterate Mohamad…not to hold to an idea that Jesus is the fulfillment of the prophecies of the Old Testament.
Whom will we believe?..the one who at over 40 years old said the angel told him this and also to marry a 6 year old little child Aisha to make him the greatest pedo leader (some say it was ok in that day; while Muslim girls sold to old men are trying at 8 years old to get divorces in the Islamic courts today. This is the same angel, who also said go and kill non believers for Allah?
When Messiah Jesus to be as Adam and Eve, one man for one woman (not little child yuk hix hix)
Messiah said to love others as you love yourself, and to share the good news/gospel to help others change.

the predictions of the Jewish Scriptures … Who then will be the Messiah to be made very high yet to be rejected to die as a lamb for our sins. to die with the wicked and be burried with the rich. Isaiah 52 last paragraph prediction and chapter 53.

The Muslim missionary literature interprets references to the coming of the Holy Spirit (Parakletos) to Mohamad, yet Mohamad does not claim to be the Messiah or the Holy Spirit.
Messiah Jesus says he will send the Holy Spirit who will be in us, in John’s Gospel chapters 14 & 16, as referring to another human comforter, Muhammad, rather than to the coming of the Holy Spirit. This argument was part of what apparently is important to Islamic missionary need – to prove that in fact the New Testament predicted the coming of Muhammad. It also denies Acts 2 event of Pentecost or the role for the Holy Spirit in the life of God’s people.
The literature claimed that no one in all of history could be the promised Comforter of John 14:16 except for Muhammad.
Easy to see how those that believed him about marrying a 6 year old little child Aisha would believe Mohamad’s angel..that he is the holy spirit, that enters the believers in Messiah Jesus.

I am kicked out of Judaism, for believing that Jesus is the Messiah!

  27. a promise is only as good as the one that makes it..or his followers!

It is clear…Isalm has no problem changing it’s words. They force others to do what they intend not what they say…what they force and want.

In countries like Iran where Isalm has control, those that Believe Jesus, are put in prison and hung.

As long as those that live around Islam ’submit’ to it, then Islam will take more and more control.

interesting to compare the promises of yes we will teach equal time to each
..then no (we lied), we will not allow teachings of Messiah Jesus.

Mohamad said to learn the teachings of Jesus who is the only Messiah and coming back to rule over the earth.
Whose mother Mary is the most blessed of all women.

Yet, he says Jesus was just a prophet, and that he Mohamad was greater than Jesus and is the Holy Spirit that Jesus promised to send and came to fill the believers in Messiah Jesus; John chapters 14 and 16 and acts chapters 1 and 2.
Mohamad was…forgetting that he had said that Jesus is the Messiah. and Mary, not his own mother, was the most blessed of all women.
which means as she cried for her son on the cross, and cried as she went to his tomb, if Islam is right and Jesus did not as predicted die as a lamb for our sins *(Isaiah 53) that…Mary had to be insane to cry over the wrong person thinking it was Jesus, yet they believe she is the most blessed of all women???

Islam says it is ok to marry a little girl child…
Islam says it is ok to kill infadels
Islam says if you write and say anything against Islam you are to be killed

Jesus says; to marry one man to one woman all the way back to Adam and Eve.
to love your enemy and give them water to drink
    Gospel of John
Whom will we chose to expect the truth from
    Islam or Messiah Jesus?

We will tell the truth, and treat you fairly? Who will you believe???

Islam does not fear fairytales..they do not hang people for teaching about Mickey Mouse…they fear the truth.
    read II Corinthians chapters 7&8
I have many Malaysian friends some are Muslim, some are other beliefs, some are Muslims that have come to know the Messiah Jesus.

In your country, if you teach the truth you go to prison, where you can teach about Messiah Jesus.

in other countries like Iran, you are arrested for just being a believer in Messiah, and many are hung for it.

Rejoice to suffer for Messiah, it is the last days, and we have the greatest opportunity today.

In my country a Jewish man put a 38 pistol/gun to my face and said, “If you say one more word about Jesus being the Messiah, I will blow your head off.”

I told him, “Unless Messiah Jesus let’s you, you cant even pull the trigger.”

he put the gun down, and put it in his car and came back to talk to me. hehe

    live for what you believe,
make underground teaching, and fear not, “Fear not for I/Messiah Jesus, have over come the world. In this world you will have tribulation, but Fear not.”

  28. the church is being tied up by Muslim ropes;

    Lion Posted: 15 Jan 10 : 9.48AM

From time immemorial church officials have always do the same thing — they never stand up for the rights of the Christians.

When the government wants to convert the Church schools into Sekolah Kebangsaan, “Okay”, say the Church officials, without even consulting the Church laities.

When the government says, “You can’t use _Allah_ no more”, again the Church officials say, “Okay”, without even thinking of the impact.

Again and again the Church officials retreated when they should have stood up to defend the rights of Christians.

    Finally this blew up.

What are the Church officials saying this time?

“But they told us we can use that word mah …”

    Yeah, right!

Why didn’t you guys protest back in 1986?

Why didn’t you guys ask help from Church networks around the world back in 1986?

True, Umno should take the major portion of the blame, for whatever has happened.

But the Church officials too have to take up their share of the blame.

If it wasn’t for their cowardice, the Christians would not have lost so much of their inalienable rights to those fascists in the first place!

Am I being too harsh on the Church officials?

    NO!

They swore to GOD that they would tender to the sheep, and they have done NOTHING.

    Editor Shanon Shah,

It is amazing that you can allow this gentlemen Gopal to make the following outrageous and unfounded remark without engaging him. Granted he has the right of freedom of expression, he is the type of people who may be unwillingly encouraging violent strife in Malaysia:

“The church had been part of an unholy chorus in attacking Malaysia, its government, its main political driver Umno, and generally favouring opposition-led campaigns against the government and its majority constituents – Malay-Muslim [Malaysians].”

While churchs have been attacked, it is only in bolehland that a person like Gopal, using a twisted reverse psychology, can claim that the churches are actually attacking the nation and the government.

For your info, my church and thousands of M’sian Christians have been praying for years each day for God to bless Malaysia and her leaders, especially the PM and to keep Malaysia peaceful, prosperous and safe from natural disasters.

Editor’s note: As far as possible, we try to verify information, and to separate fact from opinion in moderating the comments section. Occasionally, as I’m sure you can tell, this can be a difficult thing to do. Many of Gopal’s comments have been rejected in the past because he has provided unsubstantiated and unverified information. As editor, I have made this standard known many times in this very forum.

As far as this particular opinion of Gopal’s is concerned, this is where your testimony is valuable and needs to be inserted into the public forum. Hopefully, not only Gopal reads your comment and digests it, but more readers will be exposed to this debate and a better and more productive conversation emerges after that.

  29. a promise is only as good as the one that makes it..or his followers!

Even in Islam, if one speaks against the extreme Muslim they are killed too.

interesting Allah may be used by both.

“If any man adds to my words, they shall have plagues put upon them.”
the closing of the Bible; Revelation 22 last chapter verses 13-16

    Who will you believe…?

interesting to compare the promises of yes we will teach equal time to each
..then no (we lied), we will not allow teachings of Messiah Jesus.

  31. I was astonished when I read all these comments..Most of them stated that ‘Whatever it is..There’s only one God..’
If you all really believe about this one thing, why do this issue became the subject here?
Shouldn’t do that, in fact the more you talk about it or debate about it, it will not prove anything instead of making things much more difficult to understand in essence..
If e believe that there’s only one God who’s ruling over us in this world, why is it so hard for each and everyone of us to get along??
Ask yourself everybody..No matter what your religion are..I believe NONE of them teaches their believers to do bad things except for those who had been blinded by the situation and the state of mind who strongly says that,’ This is the true religion@belief, everyone should turn over to this one..’..
SATAN’S or in other religion, Bad spirits are the one who are extremely struggling to tear us apart, not from each other, but from The Mighty One..So, in order for them to do that, they will create fuss n confusion among us so that we wil fall into their traps..
THIS IS MY OPINION ON HOW WE SHOULD LIVE IN THIS WORLD..GOD IS GOOD ALL THE TIME..IF WE BELIEVE THAT GOD IS GOOD, NEVER DO SOMETHING LIKE THIS OR ANYTHING ELSE THAT WILL MAKE HIM ANGRY..
    AMEN..!!
